Waltz - Belongs to ballroom style. It's very popular on wedding dancefloors, danced by the groom and the bride as their “first dance” The character of waltz is supposed to be very smooth and flowy. Waltz strarted in Germany in the 18 th. Century but has entered into the ballrooms of the world in early 19 th century.At the beginning, waltz was what we call now the “Vienniese Waltz”. Over time the tempo has slowed down which created new mowements and paterns.
Foxtrot – Ballrom dance. Also very popular today as a wedding dance. Although it may look very similar to waltz at first glance, the characterization and the rise and fall actions make it different and more playfull than waltz. Foxtrot originated in the summer of 1914 by the actor Harry Fox. As part of his act in the New York Theatre, Harry Fox was doing a series of trotting steps. Therefore people named Fox's dance the“Fox's Trot” That same year the American Society of Profesors of Dancing standardized the steps.
Rumba - belongs to rhythm or Latin category of dances. It ‘s the slowest latin dance. The native Rumba folk dance was essentially a sex pantomime danced very fast, with exaggerated hip movements. Man's attitude was dominating over the defensive attitude of a woman.That charachterization is what makes rumba so romantic It is known as a “dance of love”
Salsa - Latin dance, very similar to mambo. Both of these dances have a pattern of six steps danced over eight counts of music, but they start on a different beat. It is not easy to define salsa. We don't know for sure who invented it. Cubans, Puerto Ricans? Salsa is a combination of many Latin and Afro-Caribbean dances. One thing we know – It is the most popular dance to be found at the clubs these days.
Swing- Rhythm dance. The most popular swings being tougt Today is a single and tripple swing. Single swing is slower and the basic step includes only 4 steps, while the tripple swing has 8 (twice as many). The history of swing dates back to the 1920's, in the black community, while dancing to contemporary jazz music they discovered the Charleston and the Lindy Hop. It is very usefull to know swing because it can be danced to almost any four count beat.
